Massive bronze sculpture (30 inches tall, 55 lbs) given to WWI Ace Carl Degelow in 1938 on the occasion of 20 year anniversary of being awarded the Pour le Mérite medal in the last days of WWI. The plaque on the base mentions “Alte Adler” (translates to “Old Eagles”) which is the term given to German WWI flyers who were considered the pioneers of aviation in their country. Degelow was the last German pilot and final German serviceman to be awarded the Blue Max, on 9 November 1918, two days before the end of the war.During the first days of the Nazi regime, he was jailed for several days for failure to give the Nazi salute during a parade. When someone recognized the Pour le Merite on his uniform, he was quickly released. Degelow went on to serve as a Major in the Luftwaffe during World War II.A creation of famous German artist Ernst Seger.
