During the German occupation of 1939-1945, the prison was used by the occupation authorities. It was the so-called "heavy prison" (Zuchthaus), intended for men sentenced to long-term imprisonment and penal camp sentences from the districts of the Higher National Court in Poznań, eight domestic courts in the Warta Region (Warthegau): in Poznań, Gniezno, Inowrocław, Kalisz, Leszno, Łódź, Ostrów Wielkopolski and Włocławek, and 72 regional courts of the Warta Region.
