Description
Uniform jacket of a German guard of the Berlin Wall from the Cold War period.
Wachregiment "Feliks E. Dzierzynski" (Feliks Dzerzhinsky Guard Regiment) – an elite motorized rifle unit in the strength of a de facto division, subordinate to the Ministry of State Security of the GDR, constituting its military and operational base, honored with the name of Feliks Dzerzhinsky, the founder of the Soviet Cheka. The unit was formed in 1953 on the basis of the Guard Battalion A (Wachbataillon A) created in 1951. Its main task was to protect members of the leadership of the SED and the government of the GDR by ensuring the safety of the settlements inhabited by e.g. at Majakowskiring in Berlin (1950-1990) and then in Waldsiedlung Wandlitz near Berlin (1960-1990), and the buildings they occupied, e.g. Central Committee of the SED, the Council of State, the Council of Ministers, the People’s Chamber, the Supreme Court and the Government Hospital. It also served as the ministry guard of the Ministry of Public Security, guarding about 45 buildings of the Ministry itself and field structures – the district boards of State Security (Bezirksverwaltungen des MfS, BV)[1]. The unit was referred to as the "red guard" (Rote Garde), a politically reliable internal security force consisting of the so-called "political soldiers" (politische Soldaten) especially devoted to the party and the state. Their special status was emphasized by a special oath of allegiance, better salaries and uniforms with unit badges on the cuffs, and frequent passes of conscript soldiers. The personnel of the unit had a reputation for being haughty and arrogant in dealing with the population.
The unit was also directed to suppress any signs of social insubordination, e.g. took part in the events of June 17, 1953 – the suppression of the workers’ uprising and of August 13, 1961 – the start of the construction of the Berlin Wall.
It was also armed with anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons and over 400 armored personnel carriers.
The unit was disbanded in December 1989.
Steel gray jacket. The material is dirty in places. Epaulettes embroidered with silver thread with four metal stars. The set includes a shoulder cord.
